VOLUNTEER AS A MENTOR

College Church is partnered with Frances Slocum Elementary at 2909 South Torrence Street in Marion, Indiana, just 8 blocks from our church.  We currently have 40 mentors going into the school every week to meet one on one with students in grades K-4th.  The mentoring hour is broken into three critical pieces; academic time, play time, and personal investment.  The opportunity is vast.  The need is great.  The idea is simple.  One child.  One hour.  One church.  One school.  You could be the one that helps develop a positive child at Frances Slocum.

If you want to know what it is like to work as a mentor you can read about Jeff and his mentee.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP

If mentoring is not a fit for you right now, think about some of these other simple ways you can make a difference at Frances Slocum Elementary School.

• Acts and Words of Kindness
You can adopt a teacher or staff by committing to pray for them and once a month and sending them an encouraging card along with one of their “favorites” ( candy bar, gum, drink, snack)

• Love to cook or bake?
Once a month send soup, salad or a baked good for a teacher luncheon or come along and help serve and clean up and get to know the teachers and staff at Frances Slocum and tell them what a great job they are doing! You can volunteer to bake a dozen cookies to send to a teacher on his/her birthday or offer to cook and serve food once a month for parent POW WOW’s. POW WOW’s are connection events for teachers, parents, and students and are a great way to get to know the families and teachers at Frances Slocum.

• Love to assemble and deliver a birthday blessing?
You can volunteer to help us celebrate each child’s birthday at Frances Slocum by stuffing a goodie bag along with a personal handwritten note that says, “Happy Birthday!”

• Love to do handy work?
Frances Slocum has a wonderful custodial staff but there are always jobs left to do. Volunteer to help do an odd job that they just haven’t had time to get to and put a check on their list of things to do.

Love to cook and smell popcorn?
Volunteer to help ever other Friday to pop corn for the students. Student’s are charged 0.50 cents a bag and this serves as the only fundraiser for the school.

• Love to pray?
Sign up to receive monthly praises and specific prayer request for Frances Slocum teachers, staff, and families as well as the ministry for the school and community vickie.conrad@collegewes.com. Add them to your prayer list and pray for them each day. Volunteer to drive by the school once a week to stop and pray for the school, teachers, staff and families.

• Love to lend a hand but not take charge?
There are many opportunities throughout the year that the school needs an extra pair of hands. These are events such as Fall Carnival, Veteran’s Day, Santa Shop, POW WOWS, Thanksgiving Dinner, Black History Awareness Day, Field Day, Science Night and more. This can be as simple as taking tickets, running a carnival game, or helping a student shop for Christmas.

• Love to help people shop?
Volunteer to work at the Bravo Store on Fridays. This is a Good Behavioral Incentive Store. Students earn Bravo Bucks throughout the week for making good choices and then they come and buy fun items at the Bravo Store where you will help them shop and encourage them to continue making good choices.
